Philippines allowed same-sex partners to be policyholders

According to the Philippines Insurance Commission, same-sex individuals can designate their partners as life insurance plan beneficiaries despite the fact that same-sex marriages are not yet legalized in the country, writes Insurance Business Magazine.

The regulator stated in the legal opinion: “The insured can appoint any person as a beneficiary.” Earlier, the human rights defenders sought the opinion of the Philippine Insurance Commission regarding the rights of LGBT community insured persons.

According to insurance commissioner Dennis Foon, there are several exceptions in respect of who can be designated as the insurance beneficiary. However, they have nothing to do with the sexual orientation of people.
