According to the survey, approximately third of respondents never heard of online insurance scams, and four out of five people (81%) aware of insurance scams, never heard of deceptive advertising that led to fraudulent websites.
“Online insurance fraud is widespread and increasingly sophisticated, therefore it is vital to remain cyber-savvy and know the difference between a real deal and one that shows signs of something fishy,” commented Ursula Jallow, director of Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB).
As the online resource UkrStrakhovanie learnt from the ABI report, one of the types of online insurance fraud is creation of a fake copy of insurer’s website and its documentation in order to deceive people into investing in non-existent products. Besides, scammers carry out illegal data harvesting, including user account seizing, and also use “phantom intermediaries.”
