Hammond denied the murder, but the jury found him guilty. As the investigation established, Hammond called the 999 service at about two o'clock in the morning and reported that he found his wife lifeless in bed. He received instructions for cardiopulmonary resuscitation over the phone. But a paramedic who arrived at the scene said no one tried to help the woman.
The court learnt Hammond had researched ways to murder his wife, including trying to find out how much diazepam would cause an overdose. He eventually killed his wife by strangling her. Days earlier, he had renewed her life insurance policy, which was now worth £450,000.
The judge sentenced Hammond to 24 years of imprisonment, addressing the murderer he said: “You were under extreme pressure and saw that the comfortable and successful life you had built for yourself and your family over many years was at risk of being destroyed. This was a murder that was deliberate but not premeditated.”
The 13-year-old daughters attended the sentencing. They asked the judge to reduce their father's sentence.
