Personal data of 33 million French people have been stolen as a result of cyberattack against the companies Viamedis and Almerys, which provide health insurance services to the population, the communique by the French National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL) states.

“Viamedis and Almerys inform about a hacker attack, that they have fallen victims of in late January, - the message says - The data leak affects about 33 million people. It concerns information about the insured and their family members, their civil status, date of birth, national insurance number.”

It is noted that bank account details, medical data and information on compensation for medical services have not been stolen.

According to CNIL, the incident is under investigation. The commission intends to check whether the affected insurers have taken sufficient security measures to ensure the safety of personal data.
