What you should do if money comes to your card from an unknown person

“Getting a refund is difficult, but possible. Once funds arrive in the account of another person or organization, the bank will no longer be able to transfer them back. If the funds transfer is in progress, then the operation can still be cancelled. If you made a mistake and indicated non-existent bank information, the payment will not be made and the money will be returned automatically,” they explained in the department of consumer advocacy of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market (ARDFM).

Sometimes fraudsters intentionally transfer money to the card of a conscientious person. According to financial experts, after the money arrives in the account, scammers demand that the funds be transferred to another account. In this way, a third party is used for money laundering. When the criminal scheme is uncovered, the person involved will deal with law enforcement.

“Therefore, it is better to return the money to the sender, since they, in turn, can sue you at any time. But first you need to make sure that money is really in your account, and this is not the scheme of financial scammers. Attackers often send SMS messages on behalf of banks and other financial organizations about the arrival of a certain amount into your account, and after that they call and ask for a refund. That is why, before making a return transfer, make sure that the funds have actually arrived. This can be done through a mobile banking application, or by contacting the bank operator using the official number,” the ARDFM department representatives recommend.

Experts say that if you receive a suspicious SMS supposedly from a bank, be sure to check with the call center and notify bank employees about it. They will be able to take steps to prevent fraudulent activity. Besides, this will help you protect yourself in case of possible threats or problems with the police. “If you are 100% sure that the money transfer is erroneous and the sender never contacts you, enquire with the bank. Make a written statement of consent to return the amount, and the financial institution will carry out the return payment in accordance with the procedures for return of payments according to the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” concluded the department of consumer advocacy.
