How scammers manage to spoof phone numbers

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, since November 2022, about 58 million calls have been blocked in Kazakhstan, including from spoofed numbers. And in the first six months of this year, the withdrawal of more than 380 million tenge by criminals, which they could have “earned” from their fraudulent schemes, has been blocked. Fingramota.kz tells how scammers impersonate others using spoofing and how you can protect yourself from their attacks.
How scammers manage to spoof phone numbers

Spoofing is a falsification technique when a criminal pretends to be someone else and does everything to gain the trust of a potential victim. The techniques used by scammers may be technically both simple, this is the substitution of a website, email address, phone number, and complex with modern technologies and artificial intelligence. In particular, this is the substitution of a domain name, geolocation, manipulation of GPS signals, interception and substitution of data transmitted between two devices, and others.

Let's consider the most common of them, spoofing with the substitution of caller's number and SMS spoofing.

Alarm call

Many people are reluctant to answer calls if the number is unknown and the code is not Kazakhstani. Fraudsters are well aware of that, so they use VoIP (IP telephony) technology, which can substitute any number. For example, this can be a short number of a bank call center or even the number of your colleague or relative. False information about the caller is displayed on the screen of your smartphone, and the criminals, meanwhile, can be on some island, that is, in any country in the world, and try to implement their selfish plan.

Fraudsters often use social engineering methods to find out the victim's personal data, such as full bank card details, especially the three-digit code on the back, SMS code or push notification. For that the attackers come up with legends introducing themselves as managers of financial institutions, law enforcement officers, ambulance workers, mobile operators, couriers of popular delivery services or store consultants. They can say that you have won a valuable prize, that they want to deliver a parcel to you, or they scare you, that your SIM card has expired, or that cyberattacks are being carried out on your bank account, and all funds must be immediately transferred to a "safe account".

How to protect yourself from such attacks?

Hang up and do not call back. It is better to contact the organization on whose behalf you are being called to clarify the information. It is important to dial the call center number yourself. The same applies to your family, if a relative or friend calls, then dial their number yourself.

If spoofing attacks become more frequent, contact your mobile operator to find out if they offer a service to filter spam calls. Block numbers that seem fraudulent to you.
