In a six-year study with more than one million volunteers, the scientists came to conclusion that it would be best to sleep seven hours a day.
According to experts, this number of hours was associated with longevity and prevention of the premature death risk. More importantly, it has been found out that more than seven hours of sleep was associated with a shorter lifespan. The scientists have also learnt that a night's rest lasting less than 5.5 hours, has an extremely negative effect on health.
The NIH also attributed sleep deprivation to less than seven hours a night in general. “For example, if you don't get enough sleep for two hours every night, after a week you will have 14 hours of sleep deprivation, - the scientists explained. – Sleeping longer on weekends can disrupt wakefulness, which can also have a negative impact on health.”
