The study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine proves that people who regularly drink unsweetened coffee are 16-20% less likely to die than those who do not drink coffee. When adding one teaspoon of sugar to the drink, this figure increases to 29-31%.
For Dana Ellis Hannes, a senior nutritionist at UCLA Medical Center, these findings are not surprising, as coffee is a healthy anti-inflammatory drink.
“Black coffee is the healthiest as it contains polyphenols and antioxidants but does not contain the inflammatory compounds which can be found in sugar and additives like cream,” Eat This, Not That quotes Hannes.
The doctor added that coffee with one spoonful of sugar had the same effect, and recommended to be careful about the amount of sugar consumed.
