The Imperial College London scientists have proved which aspects of the immune system are regulated by sex hormones and how this affects the risk of disease and the health of men and women.
The analysis revealed several key elements of the immune system that depend on sex hormones, including the pathways of inflammatory responses to infections and diseases.
“For the first time, we were able to find out which parts of the human immune system are regulated by sex hormones rather than genetic differences,” the scientists noted.
The results show that increasing testosterone levels and decreasing estrogen levels alter the balance between important immune system signaling systems.
Thus, for the first time, the study explains the mechanisms underlying the differences in how men and women experience infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.
