WHO warns of high risk of global spread of omicron strain

“It is not yet clear if omicron infection causes more severe disease than other variants, including delta,” the WHO website informs. According to scientists, the increase in the number of hospitalizations in South Africa may be associated with a growing number of infected and not with an increase in the severity of the disease. Besides, no deaths from the new strain have yet been noted.

A new variant of SARS-CoV-2 dubbed “Omicron”, likely caused another surge in coronavirus infections in South Africa. According to experts, the strain has an unusually large number of mutations. The omicron was first discovered on November 23, 2021. The sick people have already been identified in Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and a number of other countries.
