Focused on finding the right foods to improve her health and lose weight, Rachel, 44, decided to experiment on her. For 12 weeks, she was only eating two dishes - broth with white meat or fish, and kefir with nuts and fruits. This simple menu helped her lose 16 kg of weight.
Two years later, the mother of two surprised everyone with her changes; her weight dropped by as much as 53 kilograms.
Nutritionist Yulia Lementina told specifically for MedicForum about advantages and disadvantages of this method. “A restricted food diet can lead to several negative health effects. If a diet excludes a wide range of foods, the body may become deficient in important nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. This can lead to energy deficiency, weakened immunity, problems with skin, hair and nails, as well as the development of various diseases,” notes Lementina.
Lack of certain vitamins and minerals can lead to various diseases and conditions such as anemia due to iron deficiency, bone diseases due to calcium deficiency, beriberi due to vitamin B1 deficiency and others.
Restricting food can cause stress and a negative relationship with food, which can lead to the development of psychological problems such as anxiety, depression or eating disorders.
“For some people, limiting their food choices can mean simplifying their diet and making food decisions easier. This is especially true for those who have difficulty planning meals or controlling portions,” explains Lementina.
Diets with limited amount of food can be effective in improving some aspects of health, such as lowering cholesterol, controlling blood sugar, or reducing the risk of developing certain diseases.
