Migrants may be required to buy health insurance for children in the Russian Federation

Russian authorities are working over the issue of introducing mandatory acquisition by migrant families of a voluntary health insurance (VHI) policy for their children. Maria Lvova-Belova, the Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, reported this in her Telegram channel, Izvestia writes.

“We are also concerned about the issue of providing medical care to children without Russian citizenship. We are now exploring the possibility of introducing a mandatory purchase by a migrant family of a VHI policy for their child,” she wrote.

The number of Russians with voluntary health insurance policies in 2022 reduced by 5 million people and was 31.8 million after an increase of 7.9 million in 2021. As experts explain, such dynamics in the voluntary health insurance segment are associated with the foreign companies’ exit from Russia, a decrease in the purchasing power of retail clients, as well as a drop in demand from small and medium-sized businesses.
