If their guilt is proven, the accused face up to 15 years in prison.
As reported to the correspondent of Rossiyskaya Gazeta by the press service of the regional Investigative Committee of Russia, in August 2022, residents of the Malokarachaevsky district, when learnt that their relative had an incurable disease, decided to use this circumstance for illegal enrichment. For motives of gain, they insured the terminally ill person in four companies under the contract "Death due to a traffic accident". The victim of the scam, as it was later established during the investigation, had not even suspected such blasphemous plans of the plotters.
Two months later, when the relative died a natural death from illness, the fraudsters staged a traffic accident involving the deceased. And after getting the necessary documents about the death, the suspects submitted them to insurance companies with claims totaling 5 million rubles.
“However, the accused failed to complete their criminal intent. Insurance agents doubted the reality of the accident and sent the materials for procedural verification to law enforcement agencies,” the law enforcement agency explained.
The accused refused to cooperate with the investigation denying their involvement in the crimes.
For establishment of truth, the investigators had to do a huge amount of work as interrogating more than 40 witnesses, conducting several inspections of the scene of the car accident, receiving and analyzing the billing connections of the deceased and his relatives. All available medical documentation of the sick man was carefully studied and, by court order, the body was exhumed. In order to establish the real cause of death of the patient, a forensic medical examination was carried out.
The department noted that under the weight of the collected evidence, the suspects admitted their guilt and gave truthful testimony. In relation to them, at the request of the Investigative Committee, the court chose a preventive measure in the form of house arrest.
The materials of the criminal case under Article 159.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Attempt to commit fraud in the field of insurance committed by an organized criminal group" in relation to other accomplices in the crimes were separated into a separate proceeding.
