“The cause of the problem is often an incorrect diet, unbalanced diet or strict diet,” the specialist specified.
Garushyan noted that sometimes a strong desire to eat sweets could be an indicator of eating disorder (in particular, it may indicate bulimia). It can be very strong in times of stress.
“If you really crave sweets during emotional stress, it is better to find a healthier alternative to relieve stress, go for a walk or engage in physical activity,” the gastroenterologist shared.
Grigoriy Garushyan says that many experts associate an increased appetite for everything sweet with insufficient consumption of minerals and micronutrients. Thus, sweet craving may indicate magnesium or iron (as well as iodine, selenium, zinc, calcium, chromium) deficiency.
“Correlation between deficiency of certain vitamins and cravings for sweets has not been experimentally proven, but modern research shows that in the absence of magnesium, cells do not receive the required amount of glucose, which leads to increased appetite,” explained doctor Garushyan.
As for iron deficiency in people with this problem, the body begins to lack oxygen and energy. Cravings for sweet, a quick source of energy, is the body response trying to increase a physical work capacity with its help.
