On the morning of November 1, 2019, Colby Trickle, a resident of Hays, Kansas, called the police and reported that his wife Kristen had voluntarily taken her own life. Sergeant Brandon Hauptman, who examined the scene and spoke with Trickle, had doubts about his words, but three days later the coroner ruled Trickle’s wife death a suicide.
Nevertheless, investigators kept working the case and found his behavior strange. Trickle cashed in on two life insurance policies for his wife totaling more than $120,000. He spent $2,000 on a life-size sex doll just two days after receiving an insurance payout.
He spent the remaining money on video games and paying off debts in about eight months. In addition, Trickle bought musical equipment in hopes of becoming a performer.
The investigators were building a case against the man for two years. They established that Kristen Trickle had drawn up a detailed itinerary for November 1, and she was constantly receiving calls from acquaintances with whom the meetings had been scheduled. In addition, the gun she allegedly used was too big for her. The detectives doubted that such a frail woman could have used it.
On July 14, 20231, Colby Trickle was charged with murder in the first degree and interfering with law enforcement. His mother told jurors Colby was having nightmares and trouble sleeping after his wife's death and said the doll was for warmth and comfort. The key testimony was given by a psychologist, who concluded that Kristen Trickle was unlikely to have taken her own life.
The man was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 50 years.
