Indian farmers often face financial difficulties due to climate risks, droughts, floods and unstable prices for agricultural products. Life insurance for farmers plays an important role in ensuring the protection of their families in the event of their death or disability. The Indian government has come up with several programs to support farmers, including life insurance schemes, but they have little coverage.
In the petition, Sundara Vimalanathan, secretary of the association, notes that currently, as per some government orders, only Rs 100,000 to Rs 300,000 (568,000 to 1.7 million tenge) are paid as compensation to the families of farmers who died in the fields. However, families of government employees receive compensation of Rs 2.5 million (14.3 million tenge) in case of death in service. The association believes the financial assistance to the families of farmers is not enough.
In this regard, the organization proposes to develop a life insurance plan for farmers that will provide death benefits at the level of government employees.
