Russian scammers staged the injuries for insurance benefits

The residents of Saransk were convicted of committing fraud related to receiving insurance benefits for a fictitiously registered injury in the amount of more than 1.2 million rubles (6.4 million tenge at the National Bank exchange rate).

The evidence collected by the investigators turned out to be sufficient to convict two local residents born in 1998. The criminal activities of the defendants were stopped by employees of the regional office of the Federal Security Bureau, reports the regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

As established during the preliminary investigation, in the summer of 2022, two friends entered into a criminal conspiracy for embezzlement to get insurance benefits.

Implementing their plans, the accomplice entered into a personal insurance agreement for the life and health of one of them in 22 companies. Then they agreed with their acquaintance, who agreed to inflict injury on them in the form of a fracture of two toes. After this, the latter, on behalf of the insured person, went to the trauma center, where they received a conclusion with the appropriate diagnosis. Subsequently, the defendants turned to insurance companies with the claim for damages allegedly caused to the health of one of them. The amounts of payouts varied from 30 thousand to 50 thousand rubles (151 thousand - 251 thousand tenge at the National Bank exchange rate). The total amount of damage exceeded 1.2 million rubles (6.4 million tenge at the National Bank exchange rate).

The court sentenced one of the convicts to 2 years and 7 months of imprisonment, and the accomplice to 1 year and 7 months of imprisonment. The men will serve their sentences in a general regime penal colony.
