Hibiscus extends life expectancy

The red infusion of hibiscus flower has a rich and tart taste. According to Profile, it is a key to longevity. In the study published in the National Library of Medicine, hibiscus treatment led to a significant increase in life expectancy, up to 24%.

As the publication clarifies, citing research in Research Gate, hibiscus drink may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The plant's rich content of flavonoids and polyphenols helps getting rid of free radicals in the body. This reduces likelihood of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases.

36 study participants were given hibiscus extract or placebo for 12 weeks. After this period of time, those who were using the medicinal plant lost weight, their body fat decreased. Thus, it has turned out that the red drink helps fight obesity.

Hibiscus is rich in minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc. It also contains B vitamins like niacin and folic acid. A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology suggests hibiscus has antihypertensive and cardioprotective properties, which might be beneficial for people with hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
