According to the report “The Future of Excess Mortality after Covid-19”, four years after the peak of the pandemic, many countries are still reporting excess deaths. “If this effect continues, excess mortality rates by 2033 will be 3% higher than pre-pandemic levels in the US and 2.5% higher in the UK,” the report says.
In 2021, excess mortality was 23% higher than the 2019 baseline in the US and 11% higher in the UK. According to the Swiss Re Institute report estimates, in 2023, the rate remained in the range of 3-7% in the US and 5-8% in the UK.
The report authors suggest vaccination of vulnerable groups, healthy lifestyle choices, and advances in medicine to reduce the excess mortality rate from Covid.
“Excess mortality in the general population is an important indicator for insurers, as changes in the leading causes of death may require re-pricing additional risks in their life insurance portfolios,” the report says.
