Karen Salkilld contacted the insurance company pretending to be her partner. The claim stated that she had died in a car crash.
Salkilld, a mother of two, continued to lead a normal life going out with friends and giving classes at her fitness center in Applecross. The police suspected something was wrong and began an investigation. Law enforcement agencies managed to prove a fraudulent scheme.
The woman faces up to seven years of imprisonment for fraud and deliberate use of forged documents. The sentence will be given down in the Perth District Court next month.
Examples of life insurance fraud
Faking a death: one of the most famous examples is the case of Karen Salkilld, described above. She faked her own death in a car accident, forged documents, and claimed $718,000 from the insurer.
Murder for insurance: in some cases, fraudsters go for an act of severity, including murder of the insured person to get the insurance benefit. Such crimes are often solved through careful investigation and analysis of the circumstances of the death.
Document forgery: some fraudsters falsify medical records and death certificates to create wrong grounds for receiving insurance benefits. This may involve creating fictitious diagnoses or using forged doctor signatures.
