160 different lines of fruit flies, 50 thousand insects were involved in the experiment in total. Scientists at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging have analyzed the insect genome.
It turned out that, despite the fact that the limited calorie intake in the body of flies increased life expectancy in average, but a significant positive effect was observed only in half of the lines. In 13 percent of the lines, the flies became more energetic and died earlier, 5 percent of the subjects lived longer but their health became weaker; and 32 percent had absolutely no changes.
The scientists came to conclusion that food restriction did not work as it was supposed earlier. According to experts, some people will actually live longer by following a diet, while others will earlier begin to suffer from age-related diseases. This diet effect depends on the genetic background, as it strongly influences on the effect that various factors have. By the way, the new discovery concerns not only diets, but also drugs.
According to the researchers, in order to understand the factor impact on body, it is necessary to determine specific biomarkers associated with the reaction to a specific intervention.
