“Products containing hidden salt and sugar pose a big threat. Salt increases blood pressure, and sugar and saturated fats contribute to the development of chronic inflammation and atherosclerotic damage to blood vessels. Therefore, it is better to limit the amount of sweet carbonated drinks, cakes, pastries, ready-made desserts, mayonnaise, ketchup, various salad dressings, as well as white bread and packaged juices in the diet. Frequent consumption of these products significantly increases the risk of stroke,” Popov explains.
According to the expert, one should also avoid processed foods and fast food that contain large amounts of added salt, sugar, trans fats, emulsifiers, thickeners, artificial flavors and other additives. These include chips, croutons, ready-made breakfasts, French fries, hamburgers, nuggets, frozen pizza, and canned food.
Popov recommends following the Mediterranean diet, one of the best for maintaining cardiovascular health. It includes a large amount of vegetables, fruits, fish, seafood, legumes and dairy products, as well as olive oil and nuts with minimal consumption of red meat.
